Oh man, the Dell is in the I.C.U. - according to my tech-savy friend, the laptop has fried some vitals; he'll try to scrounge up some spare parts, and (hopefully) that will get my ailing mobile computing slab up and running, but
no promises.

Originally I bought the Dell, because a Veterinarian friend swore by them (said that the Dell in their animal clinic consistantly got clogged up with cat and dog hairs, was dropped from counters, and survived dozens of non-computer-friendly employees, and still operated like a champ). Maybe I have poor lap top karma (or maybe I shouldn't have lent my Dell to my dad - hmmm... that might explain why he recently returned it to me and bought his own lap top...). No use raging over burnt diodes.

Hang tough my flat silicon friend - help is on the way...

I'm sure somebody out there would like to give your Powerbook a new home... hello? Anybody want an Apple lap top? Hello...?
My first laptop was a used IBM ThinkPad with the "butterfly" expandable keyboard (which is very ingenious). It was very small and simple, but reliable. Next I bought a brand new Sony Vaio, which was very flash, but not at all reliable (my Japanese engineer friends refer to Sony electronics as "one-year wonders" or "disposable computers"). I hope that the Dell can be repaired (maybe even slightly upgraded). I can't afford a new lap top at the moment.
Blimey! I see you're back on a posting frenzy; I can hardly keep up.
I'm sorry to hear about your Dell, and hope with a little luck its various components can be persuaded to pull up their socks and get back to work. It really is shocking how fragile and unreliable modern technology can be. Note that these things usually fail just after the warranty expires. My old chemistry teacher would cry foul play; he took great joy in expounding on his numerous conspiracy theories related to business practices. I'm guessing you are well out of your warranty by now though.
Alex!
Oh yes, definitely, the warranty has long expired. However, my friend builds computers, so there is a good chance that he can shake some life back into my lap top.
If that doesn't work, then I guess I'll have a really big paperweight...
